Why Organic Farming Is Bad

We have all heard the slogans” Sustainable agriculture is good for business” and “No-till gardens are good for the soil.” But if we dig a little further, we may find that there are actually some real benefits of organic gardening. Organic farmers use environmentally friendly practices to avoid harmful chemicals, herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals. Without pesticides, chemical fertilizers and insecticides, organic farming wouldn’t be very effective. Organic gardeners do not use herbicides to control weeds; instead, they use techniques such as using rototiller and rotating crops to control the soil’s fertility. With the proper pest control methods, organic farming is more effective than traditional agriculture.

Since organic farming creates no chemicals or poisons, it doesn’t create the runoff that accompanies conventional farming. Chemical runoff causes water pollution that harms the drinking water and aquatic habitats. Organic farmers don’t use the same harsh chemicals found in conventional farmers.

As far as soil health goes, organic farmers use natural compost and manure and do not add any synthetic materials to the soil. Organic soil has more nutrients in it because nature always tends toward stability. When farmers work over a field of crops, they don’t break down the plant like conventional farmers. There is no need for any harmful pesticides or herbicides. On top of this, biological pesticides and herbicides are widely used because they are so effective. In fact, some farmers use a mix of both synthetic and natural pesticides and herbicides, allowing them to control more of the plants’ environment.

Another reason organic farming is bad is that synthetic fertilizers and pesticides make food production much easier. These fertilizers and pesticides can greatly increase crop production, but in return cause more problems with the environment. Manmade chemicals are known to seep into water sources, pollute waterways, and generally ruin the world we live in. Organic farmers, by comparison, don’t rely on artificial means to increase food production.

One of the most serious problems associated with organic farming is that farmers do not practice good pest control. Because organic farmers do not use chemical weapons to control pests, they do not have an increased chance of dealing with dangerous insects. Unfortunately, these harmful insects are one of the biggest causes of environmental pollution. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides not only kill pests on the surface of the earth, but they also penetrate the soil, seeping into the ground and into the pores and roots of the plants they are sprayed onto.

These factors make organic farming much more expensive than traditional farming. In fact, it is impossible to completely eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides. However, by eating more green produce and taking advantage of more natural pest control methods, farmers will be able to lower their dependence on these expensive inputs. This will decrease the amount of money that they have to pay out each year to various chemical companies, thus allowing them to produce more crops with less expensive inputs. With this in mind, it becomes clear that organic farming better compensates for less vulnerable environments.
